Cryptocurrency refers to the digital currency used as a medium of exchange over the computer network and doesn’t depend on the directives of a central authority like Banks or Government to monitor its transactions. It’s a decentralised system that eliminates the need for traditional middlemen like banks when transferring money between businesses by verifying that the participants to a transaction genuinely have the money they claim to have.
Origin of Cryptocurrency:
The concept of digital currency originated way back to 1983 when an American Cryptographer, David Chaum devised a type of cryptographic electronic currency called Ecash which he implemented through Digicash in 1995.
Before it could be delivered to a destination, Digicash required user software in order to withdraw money from a bank and specify particular encryption keys. This made the digital currency impossible for a third party to track.
Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym for a computer programmer or a group of programmers launched Bitcoin on January 3, 2009. Its proof-of-work system employed the cryptographic hash function SHA-256. The formation of a decentralised DNS was attempted with the creation of Namecoin in April 2011. When Litecoin was released in October 2011, SHA-256 was replaced with scrypt as the hash function. In August 2012, Peercoin was developed using a proof-of-stake and proof-of-work combination.
Proof-of-work refers to a cryptogenic proof provided by one party ( the prover) to the verifier that an amount of particular computing effort has been spent. Then, with little to no work on their part, verifiers can authenticate this expenditure.
