WORKPLACE STORY.

I have four years’ of work experience in a call centre. I began working for Reliance Infostreams Pvt Ltd. handling inbound calls for Reliance Communications. I worked in several shifts including the night ones where I used to receive calls from men soliciting sex. Honestly, I thought these guys thought only of what’s between their legs. I used to give friendly warning and disconnect the call. There was this guy who used to call me every night and saying he would make me pregnant. My first disgust for the profession started right after this call. I had to maintain my professional conduct.

I got a better paying job at 24/7, a call centre in Chennai. My project was calling customers In the US for the credit cards. I enjoyed my job but unfortunately I developed vertigo and thyroid problems because of the night shift. I had barely lasted for a month.

Diseases welcomed me with open arms. I had tennis elbow and other physical problems. I had to say goodbye to yet another job due to poor health. I took a break for some time and joined Sulekha.com where I continued working for one and a half years. I had to quit again because of non stop vertigo problems.

I got married and settled as a freelance writer. Now, I am doing quite well by God’s grace. I do regret quitting high paying jobs but health comes first. How I wish I wasn’t prone to health problems! The silver lining in the cloud is that I am now able to follow my passion of reading and writing. I am my own boss and set my own time for working.

I am sharing my experience to convey an important message. Don’t try for a job simply because it’s high paying. Monetary compensation alone isn’t enough. We have to love our jobs instead of treating them like a burden to get maximum job satisfaction.

I have seen people forcing their children to choose their field of education on the basis of scope of earning money.

My relatives are also questioning me about my sanity in taking up writing as a profession because the income is not always guaranteed. They want me to take some job. But I am very happy with what I am doing. I have decided to ignore unsolicited advice because the blabbering mouths aren’t feeding me or my family. Neither am I dependent on wagging tongues for food or livelihood.

Just follow your passion and dreams. You are bound to be successful and money will start pouring in.
