The Story so far:

Grace Royce accompanies her best friend and colleague, Sharmila Gupta’s wedding in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, India. When Sharmila shows her fiance’s photo, Grace is shocked because she has frequently seen him in her dreams forcing an innocent girl to suicide.

She saves Sharmila from marrying a criminal after nabbing him and his friends in a shameful act of trying to hang an innocent girl.

Grace has recurring dreams of Sharmila attempting suicide when the friends are holidaying in Dehradun. Her fear is about to materialize after their trip. Grace skilfully revisits the past and alters everybody’s memories to stop the wagging tongues of people from hurting Sharmila. She thwarts the attempt of a mad scientist X, in Australia, who is watching the proceedings, to kill Sharmila.

He stages small accidents which Grace is unable to prevent. Finally, he is able to cause a hit and run accident leading to Sharmila’s death. Grace is mourning the loss of her good friend while blaming herself for failing to protect her. She has a strange dream at night, where she finds herself in her bedroom in Australia. Her dead parents appear before her and they take her into the alternative future time zone, had Sharmila lived. Whatever she witnesses is awfully shocking to her.

She sees the evil side of Sharmila abusing her friendship and taking advantage of her. She is horrified to see her best friend kidnapping and sacrificing her with the help of a mysterious stranger. She comes back to her room with her parents and Sharmila’s soul pays her a visit. And now:

Secrets revealed.

Grace saw Sharmila’s smile fading a little after seeing the skepticism reflecting on her face. Sharmila said, “I thought you trusted me. I know the visuals of the future scared you. Gracie, please don’t blame yourself for my death. I had chosen it when I was young.” Grace and her parents were stunned to hear this revelation. ” What are you talking about, Sharmi?” asked Grace, ” I thought you were going to convince me that my visuals were nothing but my imagination.”

Sharmila added with a sigh, ” I wish I could say that, but souls never tell a lie. You witnessed the alternative future with my being alive. The future you saw was bound to happen. There is a story behind my turning into a possible monster.” Grace was intrigued by her tale.

Sharmila continued,” I was around thirteen when this scary incident took place. My grandfather was severely ill. My grandma was always at his bedside, serving him faithfully as a devoted wife. I felt sorry for them and decided to take the matter into my own hands. I just wanted to make sure my grandfather slept peacefully. I offered him a glass of milk and put sleeping pills in it. He passed away in his sleep. My family believed he died of natural causes, but I couldn’t hide my guilty emotions. As days passed, I couldn’t focus on my studies and started losing my appetite. My parents and grandma had no idea of what I had done. They continued to ask me what was wrong with me. They tried consoling me by saying that Grandpa was sick and old. He was in pain and now got relief. I couldn’t hold my secret anymore. I burst out crying and admitted giving sleeping pills to grandpa before he died. All of them were shocked by my confession. My father slapped me hard, and my mom avoided talking to me. My grandma was so furious that she immediately cursed me to be a monster after growing up. I was scared. My family shunned me that day. They continued to treat me with indifference. I couldn’t take it any longer. They were treating me like a murderer. I was thankful that they didn’t send me to a juvenile home. Finally, I yelled at them, “I know I had been foolish to give sleeping pills to Grandpa. I thought he would sleep peacefully instead of hollering in pain every night. I never wanted to kill him or watch him die. I only wanted to help him. Is it my fault that ultimately he did get relief from his pain and misery? Did you all want him to live and watch him suffering from excruciating pain? I am not justifying my action. Had I wanted, I would never have confessed to my crime. I thought you would understand and try to comfort me instead of treating me like a criminal. I thought elders would be more forgiving. Grandma, do you think Grandpa would have preferred to live in pain as long as he lived? Is that what you wanted for him?” My family was speechless. Grandma had tears in her eyes and hugged me. She apologized to me for being hasty and felt sorry for her curse. My parents also asked for my forgiveness. Grandma said that she couldn’t take back the curse but modified it so that it wouldn’t affect me.”

Grace found herself captivated by the story. “Please continue your story, dear Sharmi,” she urged her,” Don’t keep me waiting.” Sharmila chuckled at her childlike eagerness. She said, “Grandma told me that the monster in me would be dormant until I turned thirty. She also added that it wouldn’t wake unless I lost my temper. She was also pleased with my telling the truth and my good intentions. She gave me a choice: to die young or lead a long cursed life. I chose the former and died a year before I turned thirty.”

Grace wanted to hug her. Sharmila was a true angel. Grace couldn’t hold back her questions. She asked,” How could you become a monster? Didn’t your grandma tell you how to get rid of it without needing to end your life?” Sharmila replied, “No. I wish I could tell you more, but the only reason she gave me was that my death was for a good cause. I can’t reveal the secrets of destiny. You will find out in due course of time. Gracie, promise me that you will be careful. There is someone who’s just like Voldemort in Harry Potter. He is planning to destroy the earth. Only you can stop him and slay him. He is the one responsible for killing me. He has a bunch of spineless followers. You need to focus on your dreams. You possess the skills to prevent a disaster with the help of your occasional dreams. Don’t reveal your secret to anyone. I also warn you that sometimes your powers wouldn’t work. Don’t get frustrated because it means that you aren’t allowed to interfere with destiny, as it happened in my case. I am going to be your guardian angel as long as you live. I will always help you whenever you call me. Only you will be able to see me. Your powers will work most of the time. Please convince my parents to move on to Australia with you. I would be relaxed knowing that you will take care of them. It’s my last wish. Will you help me, Gracie?”

Grace promised to look after Sharmila’s parents as her parents beamed at her proudly. The trio smiled at her and assured her that they would visit her when she needed them. The bright light vanished. Her room plunged into darkness. She woke up with a start. It was 9 AM. ” Damn it,” she cursed and got out of the bed. Sharmila’s mother smiled at her and said, ” Good morning, Grace. I hope you had a sound sleep. Don’t keep thinking about Sharmila. The life must go on.”
