CHAPTEr 4

A dreadful tale of treachery and betrayal.

Grace saw herself going shopping with Sharmila. Her best friend seemed to have misplaced her purse and made Grace pay for her indulgences. Sharmila started using her charm to manipulate Grace into doing things for her. She cited her poor health as a reason to get her share of office work done by Grace. The invisible Grace and her dead parents watch Sharmila snooping on Grace and stealing her ideas. She planted drugs in Grace’s purse after the latter went to the restroom. Sharmila approached Grace after she saw her returning to her cubicle.

She faked a smile and said, ” Gracie! Would you please give me your mobile for a minute? I forgot to recharge mine, and I have to make an urgent call.” Grace opened her purse but was shocked to find drugs in it. Sharmila covered her sinister smile and asked her, ” Are you alright? What’s that thing in your purse?” She walked over to her and placed her hand over her mouth. “Are you taking drugs, Gracie?” she asked incredulously.

“Sharmi,” pleaded Grace, ” I am innocent. I never take drugs. Someone wants to frame me. You know me very well. I hate smoking, alcoholism, or any form of addiction. Why would I resort to drugs?” Sharmila didn’t look convinced and said,” I am sorry, Grace. The evidence in your bag suggests otherwise. I will have to report it to the management. I can’t do any special favors to you because you are my friend.”

Grace pleaded with her, ” Please don’t ruin my life. I can’t afford to lose this job.” Sharmila dragged her to the conference room with a malicious grin on her face. She closed the door behind her and turned to face Grace. The latter had the shock of her life when she saw Sharmila’s eyes changing their colors from brown to glowing amber. Grace was scared to look at her and said, “You look different. What’s wrong with you?” Sharmila laughed hysterically, sending shivers to her spine. She said,” You owe your allegiance to me, Grace. If you want to save your job, you will have to do my bidding. Accept me as your master. Remember, your life is in my hands. I know how to destroy you.”

Grace had tears in her eyes. She had no choice but to accept Sharmila as her boss. The invisible Grace cringed at watching herself getting humiliated every day. There was something wrong with Sharmila. The invisible Grace and her parents decided to follow her. Their office hours were over. Sharmila and Grace went their separate ways. A mysterious stranger in a black overcoat with sunglasses hugged Sharmila. Grace watched in disgust as they entered into a liplock. ” Darling,” moaned Sharmila, ” I can’t pretend to be the dumb bimbo’s friend anymore. How long do we have to wait for my powers to awaken?” He chuckled,” My little vixen is getting impatient, isn’t she? Just wait for two more days, and then everything will be alright.”

The entire scenario kept on changing on its own. It moved forward by two days. Grace exited from her office after a grueling day as she did additional tasks dished out to her by Sharmila. She found herself getting kidnapped by some masked men in a black van. They stopped outside a religious shrine. It looked like a dilapidated temple. It was getting dark, and Grace shivered as she could feel the eeriness around her. She saw the figure of a woman dressed in black with her hair flowing below her waist. Grace and her parents were watching the proceedings in stunned silence. The masked men released her into the mysterious woman’s custody.

She turned to face Grace. There was a bloodcurdling scream from her( Grace). It was Sharmila. She looked like a demon in possession. Grace said feebly,” Why have you kidnapped me? I never hurt you. I saved your life.” Sharmila chuckled, “You were foolish to interfere with time and save my life. You have the tremendous power to change the destiny of the entire world. Yet, you never utilized your potential. It’s a pity that you have to part with your witchy powers. I am going to offer you as a sacrifice to Mother Kali. Your powers will merge within mine, and I will be the undisputed queen of Destiny and time.”

A mysterious stranger joined her, and he sharpened the blade of the gilded sword. Sharmila forced her to bend on her knees. Her partner brought down the sword at one strike as Grace’s head rolled on towards the invisible one. ” Noooooo! ” she let out an ear-piercing scream after watching her decapitated body. Her parents brought her back to the bedroom. Grace was in tears.

She couldn’t believe the images of her sweet friend turning into a monster and murdering her. “It’s not possible,” she claimed,” My best friend would never betray me.” ” Thank you for your faith in me, Gracie,” said a sweet, familiar voice. Grace saw her best friend, Sharmila, standing next to her parents. She was glowing like an angel with a sweet, innocent smile on her face. Grace was speechless. She was wondering whether she could trust her or not.
